Sleep posture, something that is highly overlooked and not really given any thought. Despite this, Back and Body Medical in Manhattan speaks about when treating patients. Your sleep posture could also be causing your orthopedic problems. Fear not though, because today we will be looking at three common orthopedic problems, and discussing their relation to sleep posture. This is in follow up to our first part article which can be found here.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS):
CTS can be caused by sleeping in a fetal position with the wrists curled. CTS causes a numb pain that can shoot up the arm. Wearing a night splint can help prevent CTS. Avoid wearing a brace that is too tight on the wrist, as it may have a negative effect.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome:
Cubital tunnel syndrome is also caused by sleeping in a fetal position but with sustained elbow flexion. You can prevent it by also wearing a brace which prevents the elbow from flexing beyond a 45 degree angle.
Gluteal Tendinopathy:
Side sleeping can compress the lateral hip which can create gluteal pain. Instead of side sleeping, sleep on your back to avoid this compression from occurring. If unable to sleep on your back, you could also try placing a pillow between your knees to take some strain off.
