Sciatica Treatment at Back and Body Medical
About Our NYC Sciatica Practice
Back and Body Medical is a multidisciplinary conservative rehabilitation clinic at 133 E 58th St, Suite 708, New York, NY 10022. We specialise in diagnosing and treating sciatica — the radiating nerve pain that travels from the lower back through the buttock and into the leg — using advanced nerve testing and targeted, non-surgical treatments.
Sciatica is one of the most debilitating pain conditions we treat. The sharp, burning, or electric pain that travels down the leg can make sitting through a meeting, commuting on the subway, or simply walking through the city extremely difficult. Without addressing the underlying cause of nerve compression, sciatica frequently returns and often worsens over time.
Understanding Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, running from the lumbar spine through the buttock and down each leg. When compressed or irritated — most commonly by a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis — the result is the characteristic radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that defines sciatica. True sciatic nerve compression must be distinguished from piriformis syndrome and sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which produce similar symptoms but require different treatment approaches.
Causes of Sciatica We Treat
- Lumbar disc herniation — the most common cause, disc material pressing against the sciatic nerve root
- Lumbar spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal compressing nerve roots
- Degenerative disc disease — disc breakdown reducing space for the nerve
- Piriformis syndrome — sciatic nerve compression by the piriformis muscle in the gluteal region
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction — SI joint irritation contributing to sciatic symptoms
- Spondylolisthesis — vertebral slippage narrowing the nerve exit point
- Facet joint hypertrophy — enlarged facet joints reducing foraminal space
Our Diagnostic Approach
NCV testing is particularly valuable for sciatica — confirming which nerve root is affected, to what degree, and whether active nerve damage is present. This precision guides both treatment selection and recovery monitoring.
On-site X-ray assesses spinal alignment, disc height, and bony changes contributing to nerve compression.

🏥 Sciatica Treatments at Back and Body Medical NYC
Our sciatica treatment approach is built around the specific cause of your nerve compression — combining multiple therapies to relieve pain quickly, address the underlying cause, and prevent recurrence.
🌀 Spinal Decompression Therapy
The most targeted conservative treatment for disc-related sciatica — reducing intradiscal pressure and allowing herniated disc material to retract away from the nerve root directly.
🦴 Chiropractic Care
Addresses vertebral and sacroiliac joint components of sciatica — restoring joint mechanics, reducing nerve irritation, and improving lumbar and pelvic mobility.
🏃 Physical Therapy
Targeted rehabilitation strengthening the muscles supporting the lumbar spine, correcting movement patterns that load the disc and nerve, and providing the functional recovery needed to prevent recurrence.
🖐 Active Release Techniques (ART)
Specific soft tissue release targeting the piriformis and surrounding gluteal muscles — essential for piriformis syndrome and as a complement to structural treatments for disc-related sciatica.
💡 Class IV Laser Therapy
Reduces nerve inflammation, accelerates tissue healing, and provides drug-free pain relief along the sciatic nerve pathway.
🧘 Acupuncture
Clinically supported for sciatic nerve pain — reducing neurological pain signals, relieving muscular guarding, and supporting the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response.
💉 Trigger Point Injections
Targeted injections into the piriformis and gluteal muscles for cases where muscular compression is contributing to sciatic symptoms.
⚡ Electric Stimulation
Reduces pain and muscle spasm in the lumbar region and along the sciatic nerve pathway — used alongside manual therapy sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have sciatica?
Sciatica typically presents as pain travelling from the lower back or buttock down one leg — often described as sharp, burning, or electric. Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg or foot may also be present.
Does sciatica go away on its own?
Mild episodes can resolve, but sciatica from disc herniation, stenosis, or ongoing nerve compression is unlikely to resolve without addressing the cause. Early intervention leads to faster recovery and reduces the risk of permanent nerve changes.
Is surgery necessary for sciatica?
Rarely as a first step. The majority of sciatica cases respond well to the conservative treatments we offer. Surgery is generally only considered after conservative treatment has been exhausted and significant neurological compromise is present.
Do I need a referral?
No referral needed. Call 212-371-2000 or book online.
How quickly will I feel relief?
Many patients experience meaningful improvement within the first few sessions. Full recovery depends on the cause and severity — your treatment plan will include a realistic timeline after initial assessment.
