Does Chiropractic Help Whiplash?

Whiplash associated disorders are symptoms that usually occur after a motor vehicle collision, sports collision, or fall. Whiplash is mainly treated with a non surgical approach, but many people do not know the best non surgical approach to treat it. We at Back and Body NY frequently treat this type of injury and we will now show you how chiropractic helps whiplash injury.

The main goal of treating whiplash is to be sure the patient will not feel these symptoms for the rest of their life, or chronically. Our goal at Back and Body NY is to help you to be able to return to your normal functioning state of work and play.

There are two categories of treatment for whiplash: acute (less than two weeks) and subacute (two to twelve weeks). We want the patient to be able to recover and heal before twelve weeks pass to reduce the risk of developing chronic whiplash. So of course this means that if you think you’re suffering from whiplash, seek help immediately.

Let’s take a look at some research. Researchers took a look at studies conducted within 30 years, from 1980 to 2009, and split the findings into five parts:

Part one:

An overview and summary of all five parts.

Part two:

Looked at the acute stage which concluded that exercise and mobilization treatments had the strongest research support, both of which are heavily used in our office at Back and Body NY.

Part three:

Looked at the subacute stage. “The use of interdisciplinary interventions and chiropractic manipulation” were concluded the strongest, but further research does need to be conducted as the level of evidence was not strong for any treatment approach in this stage.

Part four:

Focused on the chronic stage. Exercise programs, manual joint manipulation, and myofeedback all reported strong results in this category.

Additionally, the authors found that an immobilization collar may make WAD worse and impede recovery.
