Marathon Injuries and Rehabilitation

To say that marathons demand a lot from the human body is stating the obvious, but marathon injuries and rehabilitation is something we do a lot of here at Back & Body, so the obvious shall be stated.

Marathons, as those of us obsessed with them know, are a punishing pursuit, not for the faint of heart.  One of the most persistent and prevalent causes of marathon injuries is faulty biomechanics, so let’s talk about that one first.

The mechanics of form.

Many will say that most marathon injuries can be chalked up to the nature of the sport and the long distances run in their course.  That’s true, but biomechanics can also be the source of unnecessary injuries.

Not everyone is the perfect fit for running, physically speaking.  We’re all put together a little differently.  So, if you’re one of those unfortunate people who hasn’t been gifted with the perfect biomechanics for running, you’re going to have to pay greater attention to form.

The prevent injury, it’s important that you consult with someone who understands biomechanics, like a chiropractor or physical therapist.  Either of these professionals can guide you to a better understanding of your weak spots and how to adjust your form to accommodate and protect them.

Most common injuries.

When training starts, many marathoners will have difficulty with their feet.  Inflammation in the Achilles tendon and the feet is very common, especially among newer enthusiasts.

Pain can also be experienced in the front of the knee and the inner shins.  While these are common injuries, they shouldn’t be ignored or endured.  Anyone suffering from any pain as part of their marathon training should be under the care of a medical professional who has specific knowledge about these types of injuries.

As the miles rack up, stress fractures become increasingly likely.  These are most common in the lower, inside shin and the front portion of the foot.  They heal in 4 – 6 weeks.  But stress fractures can also occur in the hips or pelvis, while training for a marathon.  Stress fractures here can take between 12 and 16 weeks to heal properly.
