One of the most common injuries we see at Back and Body Medical in Manhattan, believe it or not, is posture issues relating to desk work. It’s very important to not only have a good chair to sit on while at the desk, but also to set it to the correct height. If the chair is too low then problems with the lower back could result.
So the video below shows Dr Perna demonstrating how and why to set the chair height to the right level based on yourself.
Firstly, setting the chair to the appropriate height helps generate proper curvature in the lower back. This provides the back with ample support and helps prevent the possibility of aches and pains coming through.
So what is the best height?
As Dr Perna shows in the video below, the best height is where the hips are higher than the knees. This naturally puts the lower back in a position where it is naturally curved and helps prevent pain.
If the hips and knees are the same height, then the back is in an unnatural position and the effect is compression of the joints and other burdens that eventually can lead to pain and discomfort.
So the bottom line is to adjust the chair so that your hips are higher than your knees.
