Professional Care for Upper Cross Syndrome

Upper cross syndrome (UCS) is the result of a muscular imbalance in the upper portion of the body.  Repetitive motions that create muscle tightness in the front of the body (like cycling, with its fixed arm position) can create a concurrent weakness in the upper back.  This imbalance can lead to neck and back pain, as well as reduced mobility in the rotator cuff.

The most identifiable symptom of the condition is “poking chin”.  The head of a patient suffering from UCS will jut forward, out of alignment with the spine.  While poking chin is commonly associated with old age, younger people can and do develop this trait as the result of the muscular imbalance that provokes upper cross syndrome.

Athletes can be especially prone to UCS if measures haven’t been taken to maintain balance between interdependent muscle groups on the front and back of the upper body. But those who work at a desk may develop it just as easily.  Poor posture, provoked by many hours of sitting in front of a computer can be a sign that you have UCS.

At Back and Body Medical, our award-winning treatment and therapy are complemented by advanced diagnostics to establish that you have upper cross syndrome.  Our team can then assemble a personalized program of evidence-based treatments to help you recover from the condition.
