NYC Dancers: Does Dancing Cause Your Low Back to Hurt?

Naturally, being in New York City, we see a lot of different people from varying skillsets and levels. From runners to football and basket ball players, and of course, not being too far from Broadway, we see our fair share of professional dancers as well. Many of the dancers we see, both professional and amateur have shown signs of suffering from low back pain. Is this a common occurrence in this field? Let’s find out.

A study from Physical Therapy in Sport from November 2017 asked this very question. It surveyed 119 professional dancers and found that just over half of them, 52%, did in fact suffer from low back pain. They complained that it affected their ability to dance as the pain caused discomfort and they were not able to perform to the best of their ability.

Furthermore, another 24% complained of chronic back pain, meaning that their pain was never truly eradicated and they suffered over a long period of time.

This has certainly been our experience too here at New York’s Back and Body. We treat many professional and amateur dancers for low back pain and thankfully have helped them to recover and get back to performing.

Many of these dancers also come in for maintenance treatments, which means that they may not necessarily be in pain, but are coming in to be treated to help themselves stay out of pain. Furthermore, this maintenance treatments has enabled many to extend their range of motion to perform at even greater rates.

We also provide exercises that are suited to them to help them maintain this level and lessen the chances of low back pain from returning.
