Dowager’s Hump Doesn’t Have To Be Forever

Dowager’s hump is traditionally associated with older women.  Named for an “an older woman of distinction”, this condition can be caused by osteoporosis.  This degenerative disease, in turn, produces a pronounced deviation in the spinal column, or “kyphosis”, producing the effect of a stoop or hump.

Osteoporosis is the progressive loss of bone mass.  Because so many women suffer from the undiagnosed loss of bone, dowager’s hump has come to be associated almost exclusively with this demographic.  But the fact is, it can strike both men and women, at any age.

Kyphosis or dowager’s hump can cause fractures which instigate the collapse of the vertebrae.  These fractures tend to be “silent” (painless) in early manifestations of dowager’s hump disorder.  Any associated discomfort is generally written off by those with the condition as tension in the back, or simply a sign of aging.

As the condition worsens, the stoop or hump becomes increasingly pronounced, inhibiting mobility and gravely impacting the quality of life.  If you suspect that you have dowager’s hump, it’s important that you receive an expert diagnosis, in order to curb the advance of the condition.

At Back and Body Medical, our award-winning treatment and therapy are complemented by advanced diagnostics to establish that you have dowager’s hump and to determine the stage it’s reached.  Our team can then assemble a personalized program of evidence-based treatments to correct the problem.
