Here at our New York Chiropractor clinic, we have some good news and bad news The bad news is almost everyone will experience a headache or migraine at one time in their life. The good news is that most headaches are related to the neck or cervical spine, and can be simply and easily treated with chiropractic care.
The exact mechanism of CGH (cervicogenic headache) is still questionable to this day, but there are two possible explanations which carry research to back them up. The first is irritation of the sensory nerves in the upper cervical region that communicate with the fifth cranial nerve and the nucleus, located in the upper cervical region of the spine. The irritation from this makes a pain that creeps into the frontal aspect of the greater occipital nerve by connective tissue bridges between the spinal cord and the muscles at the base of the skull.
Our New York Chiropractor follows up saying that there is chiropractic treatment that we can provide to help your headache pain. Spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapies (myofascial release, active release techniques of the tight suboccipital muscles, manual and home cervical traction, and posture correction are all used separately or combined together (depending on the patient) to treat your CGH.
To be the bearer of bad news, the root cause of the headache may not be so uncomplicated. Some red flags to look for of a complicated type headache include an extreme headache that forms quickly out of nowhere, noticeable visual or auditory problems, balance disturbance, dizziness, weakness, paralysis, speech difficulties, mental confusion, nausea, and vomiting. Our New York Chiropractor wants you to know that these specific headaches could be considered very dangerous: a headache that gets extremely painful and continues to worsen over 24 hours, a headache after experiencing head trauma, a headache that wakes a person from sleeping, and a headache that lasts longer than 48 hours.
Doctors of chiropractic, such as our New York Chiropractor are trained to evaluate and treat patients that complain of headaches. We are here to help you if you need to be treated for a headache.
