Blood pressure is one of the biggest health worries in western life today. There are many Google searches for example, regarding hypertension in Manhatten or high blood pressure treatment. While there are many ways to help control this condition, one practice has also been shown to help it. That practice is chiropractic care.
WebMD highlighted a study which was conducted in 2007 where a certain type of chiropractic adjustment which was applied to the Atlas vertebra actually helped to reduce the blood pressure in a controlled group of patients. The study included a placebo where an adjustment was still performed, but it was not the same as the one that was carried out on the Atlas area. It was carried out on 50 patients, half with the proper adjustment and half without.
The results showed that this adjustment to the Atlas did significantly drop this hypertension in the patients by as much as 14 mm HG for systolic and 8mm HG for diastolic (the lower number in blood pressure readings) blood pressure. For the other 25 patients that had the sham adjustment, there was no change in their blood pressure.
The incredible thing was that the patients who had the Atlas adjustment, their blood pressure remained normal for a further 8 weeks and no medication was needed.
Dr George Bakris, who was the director of University of Chicago’s hypertension center (and also the main author of the study), wrote “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood pressure medications given in combination. And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems.”
Other studies that even date back as far as the 1980s along with larger and more intense studies have been published as well. The theory as to why the improvements in blood pressure through chiropractic adjustments is that it affects something known as the parasympathetic nervous system. This system has some control and seems to lower the diastolic blood pressure and adjusting the mid thoracic area has an affect on the systolic blood pressure number. Between the two of them, it seems that blood pressure reduces.
The beauty of this knowledge is that chiropractic care has little to no contraindications, unlike taking medication or other treatments. If you suffer from high blood pressure, perhaps a visit to see if it could benefit you would be an option? After all, it can’t hurt.
