The hips form a crucial part of the human structure. They are at the center of the body and provide a great deal of stability and also flexibility too. The bear a great deal of weight and a proper functioning hip is vital to any human. In the younger generation, many activities, sports and other physical activities place the hip under a great deal of stress and with the increase in athletic programs for our youngsters, hip injuries have also risen. In our practice here in New York, we see many youngsters from many activities not limited to athletics in pain and injured.
Studies have shown that in athletic youngsters, between 5 and 9% of all injuries are related to the hip. Between the years of 2000 and 2010, the data from around 121,000 young patients was analyzed and the most common injuries seemed to be for boys:
23% labral tear
11% avulsion fracture
11% slipped capital femoral epiphysis
8% disclocation
8% tendonitis
For girls:
59% labral tear
14% tendonitis
7% snapping hip syndrome
5% strain
5% bursitis
It’s interesting to note the differences in injury between girls and boys. This can be put down to the different activities and different pressures on the hips that these activities give. The top 5 activities causing hip problems are dancing (23%), soccer (19%), gym (9%), ice hockey (8%) and track & field (7%). The most common injuries occurred in females aged between 13 and 17.
Of course in both sexes, the body is still developing and this can also make diagnosis more tricky and thus treating the patient accordingly. The key is that early intervention is best and if any pain is felt early on, the sooner we can see and help, the better.
