How long we can live a healthy life is important, because living longer does not always mean living better. About one in five people live until they’re 100, but this doesn’t always mean they’re healthy. From 1990 to 2017, life expectancy has gone up by about 10 years, but everyone has a chronological age and a biological age. Chronological age is just a number and does not really mean anything, where as biological age depends on our daily habits like diet and exercise. Those who have a lower biological age than chronological age will live longer because their quality of life is healthier.
No one wants to live an extremely long life if they are not healthy. Being sick is miserable. With this being said, disability is rising. Many of these disabilities include musculoskeletal disorders, mental and substance use disorders, neurological disorders, and diabetes. No country in the world has been able to tackle all of these disabilities. Did you know that women are more prone to live a life with disabilities than men?
Because of these chronic diseases, lifespan has stopped expanding in many countries. Obesity is another main cause of mortality rates. Here are some things that you can do to increase life span and health span.
- never smoking,
- body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2
- ≥30 min/d of moderate to vigorous physical activity
- moderate alcohol intake
- High diet quality score (upper 40%)
