Treatment Option Comparison for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition caused by repetitive movements.  Most commonly associated with heavy computer usage or prolonged periods of typing, carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by any repetitive tasks involving the use of the hands.

The underlying physical cause of CTS is nerve compression, occurring in the median nerve running through each wrist.  Common symptoms included tingling, numbness, soreness and weakness in the thumb and four of the five fingers of the hand (excluding the pinky finger).

Here, I want to discuss chiropractic care against other approaches to the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.  While many think of the back and neck when they think of chiropractic therapy, my discipline addresses the nerves of the body and CTS is a condition caused by nerve compression – which is a focus of chiropractic care.

Case study series

A series of case studies was conducted by a group of researchers to arrive at a treatment option comparison for carpal tunnel syndrome which was empirically supported.

91 subjects were involved.  All displayed symptoms of CTS.  Divided into two groups, subjects were either treated using traditional approaches (splints worn at night and ibuprofen), or with chiropractic therapies (manipulation of upper extremities and spinal manipulation).

There was improvement of the condition in both control groups, but vibrometric testing (gauging sensation) revealed that subjects receiving chiropractic care saw greater progress.

Chiropractic care is effective for CTS

The results of this treatment option comparison for carpal tunnel syndrome demonstrate conclusively that chiropractic care is an effective therapeutic response to the condition.  It was shown to offer patients a drug-free alternative to the traditional treatment model and a further option to avoid the need for surgery.

This is especially true for those who are unable to take medications like ibuprofen due kidney issues or a compromised stomach lining.  Chiropractors are also likely to offer alternatives to drugs, like fish oil and turmeric, which are very effective for reducing inflammation and the discomfort associated with it.

In addition, manipulation isn’t the only type of therapy chiropractors will deploy to treat CTS.  Chiropractors may also use methods like ice therapy and ergonomic modifications for the workplace to prevent recurrence.

Back & Body Medical

I work with a team of outstanding clinicians, practicing four distinct medical disciplines.  At our award-winning clinic, we have revolutionized pain relief therapies, because we work as a team.  Chiropractic care is effective all on its own for carpal tunnel syndrome treatment, but with a range of therapeutic options available at one location, Back & Body patients have the benefit of 360-degree treatment.

Back & Body Medical’s multi-disciplinarian model has won numerous awards, because it offers patients superior outcomes.  Individualized treatment tailored to patient need is our methodology and it’s changing lives.
