The Graston technique is a type of manual therapy used to mobilize soft tissues. With this innovative treatment, the certified practitioner uses specially designed stainless steel Graston instruments to detect and treat soft tissue injuries. Each instrument has been specifically shaped for a particular area of the body, such as the neck, hand, or leg. Usually with other forms of manual therapy, the practitioner is limited to more superficial treatment, due to the compression of the finger pads when pressed upon the body. The stainless steel Grastron instruments allow the practitioner to access and treat deeper restrictions, thereby enabling greater healing.
During a treatment session, the instrument specifically designed for the particular affected body area is run along the desired area of treatment. Similar to how a stethoscope amplifies sound, the Graston instruments amplify touch for the practitioner. If an adhesion is present, the patient and the practitioner will experience a distinct feeling of grittiness or bumpiness. Once the adhesion has been identified, the instrument can also be used to break it up so that the adhesion can be absorbed into the body. This technique enables the practitioner to detect even minor changes in the muscle fiber, which improves overall diagnostic accuracy and treatment.
In addition, treatment time is typically brief, usually lasting between 3-6 minutes. Often, patients experience immediate symptom relief and quicker rehabilitation and recovery times. This leads to a decreased overall duration of treatment, as compared to other treatment options.
This technique is currently used worldwide by over 13,000 clinicians, including athletic trainers, chiropractors, and occupational, physical, and hand therapists, to treat conditions such as:
Fibromyalgia
Carpal Tunnel
Neck and Back Pain
Knee Pain
Illiotibial Band Syndrome
Trigger Points
Plantar Fasciitis (foot pain)
Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
Rotator Cuff Tendinitis (shoulder pain)
Shin Splints
