Electric Stimulation. Sounds thrilling, doesn’t it? Exciting and scintillating. Perhaps the words conjure up images of mirror balls, beats pumping as the dance floor bounces under a thousand happy feet. But it’s not a Manhattan club. It’s a form of relief. So don’t put on your dancing shoes just yet.
Keep them handy, though. Electric stimulation is a sophisticated, non-invasive therapy that’s been helping millions of pain sufferers all over for the world, since the 1970s. It can get you back in the club, on the job and in the game, if you’re suffering from a condition that’s causing you pain and cramping your style.
TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is the clinical name for electric stimulation, a therapy that’s growing in popularity for the treatment of pain. Conditions from osteoarthritis to fibromyalgia see measurable, short-term results from the use of electric stimulation. At Back & Body Medical, we see these results borne out in outstanding patient outcomes using this treatment. When employed as part of an integrated care plan, electric stimulation can help you get your happy feet back and tearing up the dance floor of life.
How it works.
A small machine generates an electrical current which is run through adhesive pads placed on the patient’s skin. Electric stimulation’s controlled current produces contractions in the muscle or muscles in the targeted area. Some people don’t care for the idea of electrical currents being run through their bodies (no matter how exciting it may sound as a concept for a Manhattan club).
But electric stimulation isn’t as dramatic as it sounds. Not at all. Electric stimulation therapy actually reproduces the natural electrical impulse which drives your muscles during normal activity. Pain-free and non-invasive, this treatment does its job by reproducing the natural electricity which moves your body’s muscles.
Electric stimulation is known to enhance the flow of blood to the treated area. This results in improved strength in the muscle under therapy and expedited healing. Electric stimulation uses a current which is controlled, according to the intensity of the patient’s pain and individual sensitivity, making it a sophisticated means of treating pain.
Scrambling the pain message.
Electric stimulation “fools” the brain by blocking the pain messages your nerves are sending, effectively scrambling them. Electric stimulation can also provoke increased production of endorphins, your body’s natural pain relievers. Electric stimulation therapy may be sophisticated, but it’s not a Manhattan club. It’s a form of relief that fools your brain into thinking the pain is gone. Time to put on your dancing shoes!
